Sarah Hardie presents her second major commission in England, a site specific, visual arts opera – before sleep at the end of love (description of a lullaby)- on Level 7 at Bold Tendencies in collaboration with T.P.S. at 7pm (sunset) on 27 September 2016.

Continuing her interrogation of the relational possibilities played out and represented by the human voice in our moment of broken encounters, she has written a verbatim theoretical narrative libretto, to be performed by herself and her twin sister, actress Angela Hardie. Referencing theoretical and psychoanalytical writing on the voice (such as Donald W. Winnicott, Roland Barthes and Friedrich Nietzsche), before sleep at the end of love (description of a lullaby) explores through spoken-word, song, and movement, the voice as representative of the ‘extimate’ self, the failure of the contemporary lover, friendship as a space of total sonority, and voicing as a loving act or a delusional escape from solitude.

The opera will be performed a cappella by Sarah Hardie and a small ensemble from MUSARC on the lower levels of Bold Tendencies’ reverberant car park space in Peckham overlooking the city. Hardie has worked with Jack Sheen, former BBC Young Composer of the Year (2011) to write the music for this work and has devised the movement with award-winning choreographer Eleesha Drennan.

This new presentation follows her commissioned artist’s walk as part of Art Night London 2016, presented in collaboration with Bosse & Baum, and her Edinburgh Art Festival 2015 production, songs for someone who isn’t there.

before sleep at the end of love (description of a lullaby) is being realised with the generous support of Arts Council England, Bold Tendencies and T.P.S..
